New York Fashion Week is coming to an end and Marc Jacobs' Autumn/Winter 2012-2013 collection stood out from the rest of the shows. Channeling his inner Dr. Suess, Jacobs set the mood with a runway designed by Rachel Feinstein. This was not the typical runway. With its twisted walkway and decayed castle backdrop, you knew Jacobs had a surprise up his sleeve.
The first model walked out wearing a large fur hat and big wool coats. Layers upon layers, it seemed like they were preparing for a big storm. This collection was a shift away from the sexy, body-hugging outfits to more loose, whimsical designs. The hats screamed Dr. Suess’s Cat in the Hat.
The colors of each piece were very somber, with the shoes embellished with crystal buckles. The basic look featured cropped pants, big scarves with intricate embroidery, gigantic hats and oversized wool or tweed coats. Each outfit was a different combination of these items. There was experimentation with various colors, fabrics and shapes. With this, Jacobs took the audience to a fantasy world.
This show was different than the beautiful collections Jacobs previously previewed. It was a bold, over-the-top show that highlighted bizarre glamour. A thought-provoking collection, this whole ensemble differentiated Jacobs from all the other designers of New York Fashion Week.
