The Met Gala is, in theory, fashion’s biggest night. In practice, it’s fashion’s biggest night for some celebrities, and it’s a chance for other celebrities to be clowns. This year’s theme is “gilded glamour,” an ode to America’s Gilded Age — roughly the 1870s to the 1900s, and as usual, only like half of the celebs are on theme.

Without further ado, four NBN editors give their brutally honest reviews of this year’s Met Gala looks. There were too many looks for us to review all of them and some people showed up fashionably late, so forgive us for skipping over anyone you wanted to see.

Blake Lively

Ali: Stunning. Amazing. Never been done before. Phenomenal. Took my breath away. This is the bar set for the night and no one else reached it. I don’t have the words. Broke my scale

Grace: ON THEME. THIS IS HOW YOU DO ON THEME. GILDED. GLAMOUR. ON THEME!!!!! She slayed. I actually don’t love these colors together, but I can forgive that because it’s literally supposed to be copper oxidizing. Blake Lively, woman in STEM.

Elizabeth: IT’S REVERSIBLE AND STUNNING NEED I SAY MORE. Blake Lively has done it again.

Lizzo

Grace: THE QUEEN HAS ARRIVED, AND SHE LOOKS INCREDIBLE. ALSO, SHE BROUGHT A GOLD FLUTE. ICON.

Ali: This is insane. The Queen of England would wear this, and I think that’s a mark of honor for this Met Gala. The colors, the tight necklace, the dark makeup, the poses. It’s giving everything that was supposed to give at this Met Gala. 10/10

Elizabeth: Slay, Lizzo, slay.

Alicia Keys

Grace: A bit literal, but Alicia Keys can do no wrong.

Ali: The hairstyle is…a choice. But the dress, the empire state, concrete jungle where dreams are made of. This totally fits American glamorous. 8/10 Alicia.

Jayna: Gilded Age is the 1870s, and the New York City skyline didn’t look like anything close to what’s on Alicia Keys’ cape until well past the forties. The history major in me is upset, but at least it looks great on her.

Elizabeth: She looks great, no questions asked. Her hair does remind me of some Korean street food potato snack…yum.

Phoebe Bridgers

Ali: Phoebe Bridgers, you can do better. The gown is beautiful, the bold lip is stunning, but the tied back hair and the all white is washing out her complexion. Not a fan. 5/10

Grace: She looks like a ghost, which I think makes her more on theme than most people. Winnie Harlow and Teyana Taylor in the back are killing it, though.

Jayna: Somehow the exact same but less formal than her Grammy’s dress.

Elizabeth: Teyana Taylor in the background adds the pop of color Phoebe Bridgers’ outfit needed…too bad they’re two separate people.

Glenn Close

Grace: Glenn Close came wearing President Elle Woods’ inaugural look, and I’m here for it.

Ali: This is the highlighter I lost four years ago. But pop off, the earrings are my favorite touch. If you stare at it for too long, the flowers start moving. 7/10 Glenn.

Elizabeth: She is pink and looks like Pink…in 30 years.

Sebastian Stan

Grace: Evil Elle Woods. That’s all.

Ali: This is actually a highlighter. -4.5/10

Jayna: It’s giving 1970s Ken instead of 1870s Carnegie.

Elizabeth: Where’s the gilded? Where’s the glamour? Someone must’ve told Sebastian Stan the theme was Glenn Close.

Tessa Thompson

Grace: If Glenn Close is Elle Woods as president, Tessa Thompson came as Elle Woods but actually on theme. She’s giving new money beauty and I am so gay.

Ali: This is Sofia Coppola’s Maria Antoinette dream. She does look like bubblegum in a great way. If I was ever lucky enough to go to the Met Gala, I would kill to wear this. 9/10

Elizabeth: Tessa Thompson is killing it on all levels right now. The Met Gala is no exception.

Kiki Layne

Grace: OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD OH MY GOD SHE IS SO BEAUTIFUL AND I AM SO GAY. ELLE WOODS WISHES SHE HAD THIS DRESS. THE MAKEUP???? THE GLOVES???? KIKI LAYNE WINS THE MET GALA.

Jayna: Get Kiki Layne more roles please. Sapphic historical romance drama WHEN.

Ali: I am in awe of this dress. I’m not going to lie, it’s not super in line with the theme, aside from the great touch of the white gloves. But, the dress is spectacular, so I’ll let the theme slide. 8/10

Elizabeth: The best pink we’ve seen all day.

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner

Ali: Joe Jonas came to play, and Sophie Turner is along for the ride. Jonas’ outfit feels like a rock and roll take on glamour, but with a sparkly chain and a laced tuxedo to boot, he is right on theme. Turner is doing her best, it’s a slay if the Met Gala was a funeral. 8/10

Grace: A rock and roll take on the theme?? Kind of a vibe.

Elizabeth: Getting strong Mother Gothel from “Tangled” vibes from Sophie Turner, if her hair and dress colors were switched.

Hoyeon Jung

Grace: Listen….Hoyeon Jung can do no wrong. But this is wrong.

Ali: Jung looks absolutely beautiful. Everything from the collarbone up is perfect, so glamorous. But Hoyeon, please. A mini dress for gilded glamour? This could not be farther from the theme. 5/10

Jayna: Met Gala styled by Nasty Gal

Elizabeth: The smolder is everything. The dress? Not so much.

Franklin Leonard

Grace: MORE MEN IN BUSTLES!!!!!! The blue is a weird choice, but I commend Franklin for actually being on theme.

Jayna: Sick as hell. On theme. 10/10

Ali: This outfit is so cool. The bustle is on theme, and hot take I do love the pop of blue. It’s expensive, it’s regal. Amazing. 9/10

Elizabeth: Disregarding the fact that I thought the blue was a handkerchief hanging off of the coat jacket at first glance, not a bad look.

Hillary Clinton

Grace: The OG girlboss in the most girlboss fit possible.

Ali: She totally recycled this from when she thought she was going to win the presidential election. The sewn in names are a nice touch, but you can’t really see them? The impact is lost on me. Also the red and orange combination is atrocious, Hilary. 6/10

Elizabeth: Is it just me or does she look photoshopped onto the carpet? A well done photoshopping job at that.

Fake Jared Leto AKA Fredrik Robertson

Grace: Everyone (including IMBd and The New York Times) misidentifying this guy as Jared Leto was hilarious. Anyway, white Billy Porter killed it.

Ali: This is eternally confusing. But also, way more entertaining and spectacular than half of the looks we’ve seen tonight. Amazing. 8/10

Elizabeth: It’s giving White Witch from Narnia.

Kris Jenner

Grace: She looks like a Peep.

Ali: I concur. 3/10

Elizabeth: A melted peep at that.

Jayna: A Jackie Onassis half-slay.

Laura Harrier

Grace: On theme and gorgeous. What more can you ask for?

Jayna: One of my favorites of the night. It’s giving railroad magnate ironworks.

Ali: Absolutely beautiful. This is stunning, and it’s gilded glamour if I’ve ever seen it. The hair, the black gloves, the layered pearls. This is a masterclass in accessorizing. All of the other celebrities wearing black, take notes. THIS is what glamorous black actually looks like. 10/10

Elizabeth: EVERYONE thank Laura Harrier for blessing our eyes AND being on theme. It CAN be done, take notes celebs.

Shawn Mendes

Jayna: let your colors fly king

Grace: Why does he kind of look like Eddie Redmayne in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them?

Ali: It does kind of look like a magician. Harry Potter would wear this. I’ve never really found him attractive, but I’m starting to get it…kind of. 7/10

Elizabeth: Luke Evans as Gaston is that you??

Megan Thee Stallion

Grace: GILDED GLAMOUR!!!! THIS IS GILDED GLAMOUR!!!!!! EVERYONE ELSE TAKE NOTES. THIS IS IT. I BOW DOWN TO THEE STALLION.

Jayna: Filial eagle on the top of a staircase bannister. AKA perfect

Ali: Mouth-open. No breath left. The details, the color, the MAKEUP. 11/10

Elizabeth: The Queen never disappoints.

Bad Bunny

Grace: WHY IS HE STANDING LIKE THE 🧍🏻 EMOJI. WHY IS HE LOOKING AT ME LIKE THAT. HE LOOKS LIKE A GROWN MAN STANDING ON TOP OF A CHILD IN A TRENCH COAT. Also weren’t the men SPECIFICALLY asked not to wear black ties???

Ali: Bad Bunny, si yo veo a tu mama, I’m going to ask her what the hell you were thinking with this outfit. Look, I get the concept. But this does not look like Burberry custom-made for Benito. I appreciate the skirt though, it’s definitely creative. 5/10

Elizabeth: The only thing I can think of at this point is how uncomfortable he looks, I feel, THIS is.

Michelle Yeoh

Grace: HAPPY AAPI HERITAGE MONTH!!!!! Michelle Yeoh came as the emerald ring from Crazy Rich Asians. She’s the moment, she’s everything, she’s everywhere, all at once.

Ali: This color is such a breath of fresh air. It is a standard gown, not really all that gilded glamour. Beautiful nonetheless, but it’s not on theme. 7/10

Elizabeth: She looks glamorous, missing the gilded, but an elegant entrance all the same.

Winnie Harlow and Teyana Taylor

Grace: SLAY. I have no idea if this is supposed to be on theme or not, but they look amazing.

Ali: I have no idea what to say. It does feel beautifully on theme, and yet it's also not? It is a slay. 9/10

Elizabeth: As a duo, they look more on theme than they do separate. Bonus points for that, I suppose. But beautiful all the same.

Gigi Hadid

Grace: I know this look was controversial on Twitter, but I kind of love it?? She’s giving sleeping bag glamour. Does it look terrible without the jacket? Yes. Do I want the jacket? Also yes.

Ali: Hot take, I do really like this jacket. It feels like a modern take on gilded glamour. It’s out there, it’s a risk especially with this color on a red carpet. But I think she pulled it off. Go Gigi. 8.5/10

Elizabeth: I have mixed feelings on the puffer. No one told Gigi it’s spring now?

Kim Kardashian

Grace: Everyone is saying this is iconic but it’s literally not on theme?? Marilyn Monroe is from the mid-1900s??? Marilyn wore it better, sorry.

Jayna: I have so many things to say. Marilyn did not have a BBL, for one. Also, why.

Ali: This feels more like the golden age of Hollywood glamour, which is still kind of glamorous, but it’s not the right glamour. She looks beautiful always, but Kim K, you have the resources to have done so much more. 6/10

Elizabeth: Kim K looks like she came straight out of Netflix’s new Marilyn Monroe documentary. Netflix, cast her for the sequel, but for the Met Gala, you can do better Kim.

Cara Delevingne

Grace: She looks like those people who paint themselves gold and stand in Times Square. Sure, she’s gilded, but she’s definitely not glamour.

Ali: Pasties are not glamorous. Period. This is not the exception, this is the rule. -1/10

Jayna: omg it’s the red dress pants that I got at a Gap Outlet…

Elizabeth: Please put the jacket back on Cara…please.

Billie Eilish

Grace: I hated it at first glance but the more that I look at it, the more I’m like, Billie pulls it off. Billie’s always on theme though, and I have to give it up to her for that.

Ali: Listen, this is not to my taste. But it is 100% on theme. It is giving Marie Antionette, and it matches gilded glamour well. The choker, however, was the wrong choice. The black hair is surprisingly nice though. 8/10

Jayna: her Emma Lazarus slay. her Martin Scorcese Age of Innocence slay. her Emma (2020) slay

Elizabeth: I’m personally not a fan, but this has been more on theme than most of the outfits we’ve seen so far and that has to count for something.

Anna Wintour

We think this Tweet says it all.
