One day you asked me to borrow a pencil.

So I lent you one and I said that it didn’t matter.

It’s just a pencil.

But you walked all the way over to my dorm just to return it.

Because it did matter, to you.

Another day you accidentally spilled your coffee on my shirt.

So you gave me your sweatshirt and said it didn’t matter.

You got it for free.

But sometimes I still wear it when I’m alone in my room.

Because it did matter, to me.

Over the summer you were sick with the flu.

So I brought you soup and said it didn’t matter.

That’s what friends are for.

But you wrote me a thank-you card anyway.

Because it did matter, to you.

Then in winter it snowed and the roads were closed.

So you let me sleep over and said it didn’t matter.

There’s nothing you can do about the weather.

But I couldn’t stop thinking about it, I couldn’t sleep.

Because it did matter, to me.

We’re playing truth or dare.

And now we’re kissing and saying it doesn’t matter.

It’s just a game.

But I’m in love and I know you are too.

Because it does matter, to both of us.
