In the on-field debut of Northwestern’s new purple gothic uniforms, the No. 24 Wildcats (6-1, 3-1 B1G) extended their home game win streak to seven with a strong 42-14 win over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-5, 1-3 B1G).
With the win, the ’Cats have also met the six-win requirement to secure bowl game eligibility for the third time in four years.
The offense dominated out the gate during the first half, scoring the most first quarter points in a Northwestern conference game since 2011.
Fourth-year quarterback Aidan Chiles came out firing, scoring three touchdowns in the Wildcat’s first three drives. Fourth-year wide receiver Griffin Wilde continued to click with Chiles throughout the game, catching nine passes for 133 yards and a touchdown for the day.

On the ground, redshirt third-year running back Caleb Komolafe had 88 yards in the first quarter, gashing the Scarlet Knight defense with a 30-yard and 56-yard run. Strong blocking from the offensive line combined with Offensive Coordinator Chip Kelly’s continued use of misdirection and pre-snap trickery allowed the team to open up big gaps for the run game.
“It makes it really easy for us,” Chiles said. “When you have five guys on the field that can make plays, it’s a lot to worry about. Especially with the complexity of our offense and how it looks, that’s a lot to prepare for.”
However, after scoring 28 points in the first half, the offense struggled to operate at that level in the third quarter. Chiles threw his first interception of the season while the team gained just 31 yards on the ground.
The team was able to refind its rhythm in the fourth quarter with a crucial 10-play, 68-yard drive that resulted in a four-yard touchdown pass to third-year wide receiver Drew Wagner, and later a drive that ended with a 37-yard rushing touchdown from Chiles to ice the game. Chiles had five total touchdowns in the game, throwing 19 of 25 for 219 yards with an additional 83 yards on the ground, while Komolafe finished the day with 150 yards rushing.

“I like the way that our team responded in the fourth quarter,” said Head Coach David Braun. “This group still needs to find its closer’s mentality. When you have someone on their heels, someone on the ropes, in this league, you can’t take your foot off the gas.”
Defensively, the story was similar.
An injury on the first drive for Rutgers’ fourth-year quarterback Dylan Lonergan meant that the Scarlet Knights were forced to put in third-year quarterback AJ Surace for the fifth time this season.
The ’Cats were able to limit Surace to just 64 yards, keeping him flustered in the pocket with 4 sacks, a forced fumble by Northwestern’s fourth-year defensive lineman Michael Kilbane and a third quarter interception by graduate defensive back Montae Pate. The Scarlet Knights’ second-year quarterback Sean Ashenfelder entered the game late in the fourth quarter, where he went 2 for 9 and was picked off by redshirt third-year defensive back Jalen Lewis.
In limiting the passing game, the Wildcats were also able to contain third-year standout wide receiver KJ Duff, limiting him to just 33 yards on the day, despite heading into the game with the sixth most receiving yards and third most receiving touchdowns in Division I FBS.
“Our coaching staff put together the plan to kind of eliminate him and take away some of the intensity that they do,” Pate said. “With a bigger guy who’s not really twitchy, you want to be more physical with him, because he’s trying to be physical with you, so you can’t just let him bully you all game. You got to just stand on it. ”
However, the Scarlet Knights were able to cause significant damage on the ground in the third quarter. Third-year running back Antwan Raymond and fourth-year running back Clay Thevenin led a dangerous attack in the backfield, combining for 266 rushing yards and the Scarlet Knight’s only touchdown.
With Big Ten powerhouses Oregon, Iowa and Ohio State next on the schedule, the results of the next three weeks will define just how far this Northwestern team can go.
The Wildcats will now travel to Eugene for a major road test against Oregon on Oct. 31, with major playoff and Big Ten championship implications on the line.
