A Northwestern student was pronounced dead this morning after their body was pulled out of Evanston’s lakefront by emergency response officials, per a report from the Evanston Police Department.
Police arrived at around 7 a.m. on the lakefront north of Clark Street Beach, after a 911 caller reported someone in the water.
An unresponsive 19-year-old woman was pulled out of the water near 70 Arts Circle Drive by rescue divers, who performed CPR before taking the student aboard a rescue boat to the Church Street boat ramp. She was then transported to Endeavor Health Evanston Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
An email sent this afternoon by Vice President Susan M. Davis confirmed that the woman was a Northwestern student, but did not disclose her name, per her family’s wishes.
Cook County police warned that Lake Michigan can be dangerous, and urged the public to exercise caution, according to reporting by CBS News and the Chicago Tribune. There were no lifeguards on duty, as Evanston’s beaches have been closed since Labor Day.
A post on EPD’s X account this morning announced that the incident was under investigation, but said there was no danger to the public at this time. The department also announced that a drone was deployed over NU’s South campus locations this morning, but posted that operations ceased shortly after.
