It all came down to this. Northwestern wrestling’s No. 6 Michael DeAugustino faced off against Michigan’s No. 20 Jack Medley in the 125 lb. bout in the last match of Friday night’s dual meet. The meet was tied 17-17 and Medley led the match 3-2 after a takedown earlier in the third period. DeAugustino pursued Medley attempting to score a takedown which would earn two points to seal a Northwestern victory. The clock ticked down under thirty seconds, but it seemed like DeAugustino would be unable to score.

Finally, as the clock showed less than ten seconds, DeAugustino got a hold of Medley’s foot and drove him to the mat while Wildcat fans erupted in cheers. However, they were quickly silenced by the ref who indicated not that DeAugustino had earned two points, but that the wrestlers had left the circle. The wrestlers returned to the center where DeAugustino made an attempt to score in the final handful of seconds, but Medley successfully held him off to earn a 20-17 win for Michigan.

The meet started very poorly for Northwestern with Dylan Utterback, Alec McKenna and Eric Yang each losing by major decision. The Wildcats stormed back from the 12-0 deficit with five straight wins to gain a 17-12 lead. No. 1 Ryan Deakin continued his undefeated campaign with a 4-1 win over No. 9 Will Lewan, and No. 21 Shane Oster and Tyler Morland each earned major decision victories in their bouts. Jack Jessen won a close bout 7-6 over No. 11 Jelani Embree in an impressive upset that swung the meet in Northwestern’s favor, and No. 9 Lucas Davison defeated No. 31 Jackson Striggow 4-1.

Michigan’s No. 2 Mason Paris recorded a victory by technical fall over Northwestern’s Jack Heyob in the penultimate match of the evening to tie the score at 17 before Medley upset DeAugustino winning the meet for the Wolverines. The loss moves Northwestern to 3-4 (1-3 B1G) in dual meets this season. Their next match takes place this Sunday, Feb. 2,  at Illinois.
